We will review the permanent and statutory bars to good moral character and how USCIS could deny a naturalization application in its discretion because of a lack of good moral character. Then we will examine the effect on naturalization applicants of being convicted of, or admitting, a drug offense; of the government having “reason to believe” the person ever trafficked in drugs; how to deal with marijuana use or employment in the industry in states where that has been legalized; and what drug conduct or convictions might make the person deportable. We’ll outline defense strategies for all of these scenarios.
